Glove-making masterclass — London

This extended 2-day glove-making masterclass in London introduces you to the craftsmanship skills required to create a beautiful, made-to-measure pair of leather gloves.

You will learn the foundations of traditional glove making through a balance of theory and hands-on practice, guided step by step through the essential techniques of hand-stitched glove construction.

Time:   9am-18.30 (incl. 30min lunch break)


Duration: 2 days, 9 hrs each day, 18 hrs in total
 

Price: £595 (including leather for a trial glove)
 

Group size: Limited number of participants!

The course combines theoretical background with practical skill development. You will be introduced to the craft of hand-making leather gloves and will learn the fundamental techniques of traditional hand-stitched glove making.

Previous hand-sewing experience is recommended but not required.

 

Day 1:

  • Introduction to the history of gloves: wearing and making

  • Introducing leather as the material for glove-making

  • The glover´s tools  

  • Glove anatomy and patterns

  • Different types of stitching (stab stitches used in leather glove making)

  • Decorative points (cover different decoration techniques)

  • Measuring the hand and learning about glove sizes

  • Introduction of the standard glove pattern and customisation

  • Glove design
     

Day 2:

  • Positioning the pattern on leather

  • Cutting and making a trial glove

  • Finishing the second glove at home

 

Terms and conditions:

The Course fee is £595 per participant. The fee covers materials for the test glove. All necessary tools are provided for the class. Participants are welcome to bring their own sewing kit, but this is not required. Materials for the further design of a pair of gloves are not included.

A selection of teas will be available throughout the day. Lunch is not included.

Participation can be cancelled by the applicant up until two days before the start of the course, whereafter 50% of the fee is refunded. 50% of the fee is kept as a non-refundable deposit.

If the course is cancelled by the organiser, the fee is returned in its entirety.

Riina Õun is a London-based designer and maker of leather gloves with over 20 years of experience.

Since 2013 she has been working as a creative director, designer and maker for her brand Riina O. The Riina O brand´s goal is to carry on the traditional glove hand-making techniques, combining them with modern technological advantages, such as CAD, machine embroidery, and laser cutting.

She has been recognised as one of three best craftspeople for England Maker of the Year 2024 award.

Riina Õun has been teaching glove-making workshops at academic institutions worldwide since 2017, including Central Saint MartinsLondon College of Fashion, Royal College of ArtsEdinburgh College of Art, Kolding Design Institute, Copenhagen Academy of Fashion and Design, The Estonian Academy of Arts, as well as Norwegian National Opera & Ballet, London Craft Week, etc.
